On Music & Arts CD - 1269; 2 CD's; In excellent sound, remastered and restored in 2012 by Kit Higginson, this set includes what many consider to be Toscanini's best recorded performance of Verdi's "Requiem" and the "Te Deum." Milanov is in superb voice, while Bjorling is absolutely incomparable. Castagna and Moscona are also excellent. The soloists sing better and are better matched than those on the 1938 BBC or 1951 NBC performances. Jed Distler writes that other Toscanini performances of the Verid "Requiem" are "superseded by this broadcast from November 23, 1940. Music & Arts' clear, well-focused sound captures the warmth and bottom often missing from the Maestro's other discs. All of the vocal contributions, including that of the supple and well-rehearsed Westminster Choir, surpass their counterparts in other Toscanini performances. Toscanini's broader tempi and greater flexibility allow text and music to coalesce in a manner few conductors have achieved, including Toscanini himself before or after this. The present concert opened with a lovely performance of the "Te Deum," a work Toscanini studied under Verdi. Excellent notes by Harvey Sachs round out this important release." Sachs writes that "Performances of the Verdi 'Requiem' often emphasize the work's dramatic aspects to the detriment of its lyricism, or vice-versa. Here, Toscanini balances these elements completely convincingly. We are unlikely to hear a more overwhelming performance of the work than this one -- ever." William H. Youngren wrote in "The Christian Science Monitor" that "Toscanini [offers] matchless pacing and shaping of the music." Terry Teachout said in "Musical America" that this is "stupendous in virtually every way." And Thomas Hathaway raved in "High Fidelity" that Toscanini's "1940 [performance] remains one of the greatest on record." The NBC Symphony Orchestra plays gloriously. This set belongs in every collection!!
